I put off Leviathan Wakes for years because “space opera doorstopper” sounded like homework. Here’s what the Leviathan Wakes audiobook is really like. Then I pressed play on the audiobook and lost a whole week to it. This is the opening novel of The Expanse, the saga by James S.A. Corey (the pen name of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck) that became the basis for the acclaimed Expanse television show, and I think the audio is the best way in. On the page it can feel dense; in your ears it moves like a thriller with the lights turned down low.

Humanity has spread across the solar system. Earth and Mars hold the power, while the people of the Belt, the miners and dockworkers who keep everyone alive, get treated as an afterthought. Jim Holden is the reluctant XO of an ice hauler who stumbles onto something he was never meant to find, and one bad decision turns him into an accidental lightning rod for a war nobody can quite control. Running parallel to him is Miller, a burned-out, hard-drinking detective on Ceres Station assigned to track down a missing rich girl, a routine case that slowly swallows him whole.
The book alternates between these two men, and that structure is the engine of the whole thing. Holden is all idealism and daylight; Miller is all noir and shadow. When their threads finally braid together, the story becomes something stranger and bigger without ever losing its grip on the people at the center. It is a mystery, a war story, and a first-contact tale wearing a trench coat, and it earns every genre it borrows from. I will say nothing more, because the discovery is the whole pleasure.

The narration: Jefferson Mays makes the whole solar system feel lived-in
Jefferson Mays narrates, and he is the reason I kept telling friends to skip the paperback and just listen. He gives Holden a warm, earnest steadiness and Miller a dry, weathered rasp, so even in the chapters that only announce whose head we are in at the top, you always know within a sentence. His pacing during the tense sequences is superb, tightening without rushing, and he handles the sprawling cast of Belters, Martians, and Earthers with distinct, unshowy voices. The full unabridged runtime is 20 hours and 56 minutes, which sounds like a commitment until you are three hours deep and reorganizing your errands around it.
Credit well spent?
Yes, without hesitation. At nearly 21 hours you are getting enormous value for a single credit, and the quality of the performance means this is not just filler on your commute, it is the main event. If you plan to continue into the rest of The Expanse, Mays carries you through much of the series, so starting here in audio sets you up beautifully. This is exactly the kind of long, immersive, expertly read book that credits were invented for.
Who should press play
Press play if you love character-driven science fiction, hard-boiled detective stories, or slow-burn tension that pays off. It is perfect for anyone who wants their space adventure grounded in real physics, real politics, and people you actually care about. I would hold off only if you strongly dislike a bit of body horror, or if you need instant action and no setup, because the first few hours lay careful groundwork before the throttle opens. Everyone else, especially Expanse show fans who want the deeper version, should dive in.
What to queue up next
- Red Rising by Pierce Brown — another propulsive, class-war space epic with a scrappy underdog and audio that grabs you by the collar.
- Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir — for the same blend of hard-science problem-solving and genuine warmth, with one of the most fun full-cast-style performances around.
- The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu — if the first-contact scope hooked you, this delivers big cosmic ideas on an even grander scale.
How to get the audiobook
The simplest route is Audible or Amazon. If you are new, you can grab it with a free trial and effectively listen for nothing, or buy it outright with a credit or cash if you already know you are in for the long haul. Prefer to read alongside? The Kindle and print editions are widely available too. However you do it, start with the audio.
