Picture an island that surfaces for only five nights a year: cobblestone lanes drowning in candy-colored fog, a shop that sells bottled wishes by the ounce, tunnels that quietly rearrange themselves beneath the streets while you sleep. Settle in for my take on the Caraval audiobook. This is Caraval — part traveling circus, part waking dream — a once-a-year game staged by a masked showman who calls himself Legend, where the very first rule is that nothing you touch is entirely real.
I braced myself for another pretty-but-hollow YA fantasy and got something with teeth instead.
A game where nothing is what it seems
Scarlett Dragna has spent years writing letters to Legend, begging for an invitation to Caraval before an arranged marriage locks her future shut. When the tickets finally arrive, it is her reckless younger sister Tella who drags her onto Legend’s shadowed island — and then vanishes into the game itself. This year’s Caraval has a single prize, and finding Tella is the only way to win.
What follows is a five-night scavenger hunt through a city built to lie to you on purpose. Clues are stitched into dress seams and whispered by strangers who might be players, actors, or something stranger. Garber keeps you as off-balance as Scarlett, circling the one question the game demands: is this real, or is it only Caraval? I won’t spoil how she answers it — only that the final stretch earns every gasp.
Rebecca Soler is the reason to choose the audio
Narrator Rebecca Soler is what tips this from good to genuinely bewitching. She gives Scarlett a tight, anxious warmth and Tella a bright recklessness, then voices Legend’s whole carnival — barkers, fortune-sellers, the oily charm of a sailor named Julian — with a showman’s sense of timing. Garber’s prose runs lush and color-drenched, and Soler always knows when to let a sentence breathe and when to hurry you toward the next trapdoor.
At 10 hours 6 minutes, it is a brisk, bingeable listen — the kind you can swallow whole over a lazy weekend. Full production notes are below.

Should you play Legend’s game?
If you love atmosphere over airtight logic, absolutely. Caraval is a mood — velvet and menace and misdirection — far more than it is a puzzle box, and the audio format only deepens the spell. A couple of turns ask you to simply trust the magic, but Soler makes that trust effortless.
Craving dangerous fae bargains and a sharp-tongued villain afterward? Try Holly Black’s The Cruel Prince. If it is the lush, grimly magical setting that hooks you, Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone scratches the same itch.
