Jade Daniels is not here to be likable

Jade narrates her own worldview through the horror canon, dropping “slasher 101” history essays like love letters to Michael and Jason and Ghostface. It’s exhilarating and, honestly, a little exhausting in the best way, because Jones never lets the movie trivia become a costume. Underneath every reference is a girl using genre as armor. By the time the water at Indian Lake starts giving up its secrets, you realize the meta stuff was never the point. The point was always Jade.

Fans of Jones already know he writes grief like a knife. If The Only Good Indians gutted you, this one works a slower, sharper angle.

Cara Gee narrates it like she means it

Cara Gee is the reason to choose the audio here. Over 13 hours and 3 minutes she gives Jade a voice that’s flat and armored on the surface, cracking just enough underneath to break your heart when you’re not braced for it. Gee handles the essay interludes without making them feel like footnotes, and she lets the adults of Proofrock sound exactly as clueless and well-meaning as they need to. It’s a performance that trusts the silences, which is rare and which this particular book desperately needs.

Slow burn, then the chainsaw

Be warned: this is a patient book. The first stretch is town-building and character work, and if you want a body every chapter you may fidget. Stay with it. Jones is loading a spring, and when it finally releases, the last third earns every minute you spent learning who these people are. I won’t spoil where it goes, only that the payoff is both a splatter and a sob.

If you love a horror novel that treats its final girl as a whole person, this is essential. If you want the same big-hearted, small-town dread with more comedy, It makes a good companion listen.

A quick aside for the squeamish: the violence is real but earned, never gleeful. And if you’re new to Jones and want something shorter to test the waters first, start elsewhere, because Chainsaw asks for your patience up front.
